Glen Carlou has highest number of listed wines on The Sommeliers Selection 2018 Wine List

Glen Carlou was awarded four listings in The Sommeliers Selection 2018 Wine List, the highest number of any other producer. Now in its fourth year it is the first South African wine competition judged solely by a panel of the country’s top sommeliers in categories, which constitute what makes up the ultimate wine list.

The four Glen Carlou wines listed and in what categories are: the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc in the Economically Savvy Whites, the 2017 Chardonnay & 2017 Quartz Stone Chardonnay in Elegant & Classy along with the 2015 Grand Classique in Voluptuous & Rich Reds.

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc sourced from select Wine of Origin Cape Town vingerons is a vibrant style, expressing layered notes of passion fruit, guava and pear, underscored by crisp minerality, which leads to a gentle finish. Glen Carlou’s much loved ‘green labelled’ Chardonnay is regarded for its well-integrated fruit with rounded oak maturation profile. The 2017, which marks the 30th vintage release of this wine follows in the footsteps of its predecessors and is dominated by lemon citrus, green apple, almonds, pear and melon notes. The 2017 Quartz Stone Chardonnay sourced from a single vineyard expresses tantalising and distinctive notes of citrus, green apple and peach stone fruit. This well-balanced wine lends itself to light and delicate cuisine. Striving towards the perfect blended balance, the 2015 Grand Classique, a Bordeaux Blend, is a complex yet elegant wine with layers of fruit, dark chocolate and savoury notes. It is smooth and supple on the palate with ripe tannins and good concentration.

The wines are judged for their food appropriateness and gastronomical relevance, along with the stylistic approach of the wines, regionality and price points. The Sommeliers Selection listed wines will all carry the Sommeliers Selection seal of approval with their own special sticker. Keep an eye out for these wines at your favourite restaurant and wine bar.

All four wines are available at Glen Carlou Tasting Room, fine wine stores or online here. Wine Club members have the opportunity to purchase all four winning wines in a specially curated six bottle pack.

Glen Carlou Chardonnay crowned National Champion at SA Young Wine Show.

On Friday 25th August, Glen Carlou took home the South African Young Wine Show Trophy as the SA Champion Chardonnay, this preceded the regional presentations earlier in the week when we won Best Chardonnay from Paarl Appellation as well as Best Wine from the Paarl Wine District.

The South African Young Wine Show presented annually by the South African National Wine Show Association is reportedly one of the oldest wine shows in the world, dating back to 1833. This wine show allows winemakers the opportunity to showcase the best wines of the current vintage.

While we will need to wait 18 months or so to taste the 2017 Glen Carlou Chardonnay in the tasting room, the judges have highlighted the potential of this wine for years to come.

The awards follow on from the 2015 Glen Carlou Chardonnay’s inclusion in The South African Sommeliers Selection Wine List which was announced in July.

These awards only resonate that the magic of Chardonnay truly shines bright in the Glen Carlou vineyards!

Congratulations to our Wine Maker, Johnnie Calitz, our Vineyard Manager, Marius Cloete and their entire team in the vineyard and the cellar. We are so proud!
