Leisure and Recreation
A luxurious holiday or does leisure and recreation perhaps mean taking a romantic cruise or simply winding down after a long day at the office? Whatever the case might be, depending on your whereabouts, you can relax and put your feet up even if you find yourself in the comfort of your own home.
If you prefer to go out for a meal or even some live entertainment, you will see that there are so many places to choose from that you might find it difficult to make a pick. This also doesn’t limit you to dining and wining only, but you can hit the track, visit the botanical gardens and appreciate the creation or even tap some balls on the tennis court, just like Roger Federer! Go Golfing, Horse riding, Hiking, Cycling or Fishing!
Whatever you decide to do in your spare time, rest assured that we will give some useful tips on how to make the best of those free hours you have, whether it be after work or over the weekend. Keep in mind that on the one hand not all of us enjoy the theatre or movies, while on the other hand many of us would prefer a stroll in the park or playing football with our friends.
Whichever way you look at it, Leisure and Recreation plays an important role in our everyday lives, seeing that we do need time off from work in order to relieve the stress associated with the workplace. In many cases this is not possible due to the ever increasing demands of most of our professions.
This is the point where the necessary skill and expertise of Lifestyle C is put to the test. These are the dynamics used when searching through the individual as well as the family schedule to determine how and where certain aspects of Leisure and Recreation will fit in with the rest of their respective routines.

The Northern reserve is primarily for water recreation. The Northern side of the Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve caters for boating, fishing and camping. Primitive campsites (scattered throughout the reserve) are also located on the Northern side.
Located about 22km north-east of Pretoria the Roodeplaat dam was originally called the ‘Pienaars Rivier Dam’ when it was constructed in 1956 to supply the surrounding landowners with water. It has developed into an important water source for the Pretoria area and after commisioning the Roodeplaat water treatment plant in 2006, the dam augments the supply of water to the northern areas of Tshwane through the Montana, Wonderboom and Magaliesberg reservoirs and is used as a direct water supply to the Doornpoort area.
The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) delegated the management of the Roodeplaat dam area to the division of Nature Conservation of the Transvaal Provincial Administration (TPA) in 1972. The Transvaal Provincial Administrations mandate was to develop the area as a nature reserve and outdoor recreation facility for the city population. The reserve was proclaimed in 1977.
Roodeplaat dam is a well-known destination for bird watching, game viewing and a range of water sports including freshwater angling.
Rietvlei dam was built during the great depression (from about 1929 to early 1930’s) and was completed in 1934. Manual laborers were paid 4 shilling a month and soil was carted away by mule carts. Feeding the dam is the Sesmyl (Six Mile) Spruit, five fountains (one is located on an adjacent property) and five boreholes. Upstream from Rietvlei dam is the Marais Dam which acts as a sludge dam for Rietvlei Dam. Starting in 1988 a two year project raised the dam and made other improvements
Originally the dam was not open to the public but the city council of Pretoria did plan the reserve ecologically and introduced a number of game species to the reserve. The Nauture Reserve was proclaimed in 1948. Rietvlei dam provides Pretoria with 15% of it’s water. The reserve covers an area of 3800 hectares and can support up to 2000 head of game.
Rietvlei Dam offers a number of sporting facilities. Fishing is allowed on the northern and western shores and a yacht club house was built on the north-western shore. Motor boats are not allowed on the dam.
The roads in the reserve are well maintained and serve the public for game viewing and the reserve staff as maintenance roads and fire breaks. Roads divide the reserve into 31 blocks. Rotation grazing is practices on the reserve by routinely burning blocks and using lick as supplementary feeding.
The Dinokeng Game Reserve, situated just outside Pretoria, is the first free-roaming Big 5 residential game reserve in Gauteng – and probably in the world – next to an urbanized area. It is a private/public initiative for which planning and development started in the early 2000’s. It was officially opened on 22 September 2011 after the introduction of four of the Big 5. The last of the Big 5, the buffalo, were introduced in late 2012 and they have settled in well.

Hazel Food Market in Menlopark
Bespreek of bestel by 012 460 7996.
Bel Kaalkop by 012 460 4791.
