|GINA BEUKES IN CONCERT WITH THE GPO|
|The fine SA violinist, Gina Beukes, currently a member of the London Symphony Orchestra, is no stranger to SA music lovers from Cape Town to Gauteng. Gina returns every so often to her birthplace and apart from performing in concerto with various orchestras, she has also shown her versatility by performing for Salon Music in two Gypsy Fiddle Concerts. Her Gypsy Fiddle CD, on the Salon Music label is highly acclaimed and still selling well since 2008.
This GPO Symphony concert allows the orchestra to display its virtuosity in the highly enjoyable Ballet Suite (Delibes) and the popular Overture to The Italian in Algiers (Rossini). The remainder of the programme displays the Art of Gina Beukes with a Mozart Violin Concerto as well as a selection of the most well known bonbons for violin by Fritz Kreisler accompanied by the orchestra. This follows short on the heels of David Garret, who recently recorded Kreisler with orchestral accompaniment on DVD.
Violinist Gina Beukes was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and started studying the violin aged 5 with Alan Solomon, later sudying chamber music with Betty Pack and also playing in her string chamber orchestras.
By the time she left in 1982 to study in the US, she had performed concertos with all the major South African orchestras and recorded for both SABC radio and television. Whilst in the US, Gina studied with Dorothy Delay, Kurt Sassmanshaus, Masao Kawasaki and Zinaida Gilels. She also studied chamber music with the Lecel and Julliard Quartets and with Felix Galimere. She graduated from the Julliard School of Music in 1989 with a Master’s Degree.
Gina returned to her native South Africa to participate in the Mount Grace Festival in 1989 and to teach at the University of Stellenbosch, later being appointed as the co-concertmaster of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. During this time she gave many critically acclaimed solo performances, presented masterclasses, was invited to judge major competitions and performed and recorded with various chamber ensembles.
In 1994 she once more left South Africa to settle in London with her husband, daughter and the family beagle, and was appointed as Principal Second Violin in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2003 she was also appointed as a member of the London Symphony Orchestra, playing the viola.
Gina plays on a violin which is a copy of the ‘Emperor’ Stradivarius which was owned by the violinist Kubelika at the turn of the last century. She also has a viola which she acquired from violinist Roby Lakatos’ world-famous gypsy band.
