The Renewal of the Covenant by Bill Randles
Bill at his best again! Let us take note!
Why the Old Testament is considered Meat and not Milk!
How relevant is the book of Joshua for us today with the Deuteronomy background!!
When you come into the promised land
Deu 11:29 “It shall come about, when the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.
Deu 11:30 “Are they not across the Jordan, west of the way toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh?
Deu 11:31 “For you are about to cross the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall possess it and live in it,
Deu 11:32 and you shall be careful to do all the statutes and the judgments which I am setting before you today.
The Fall of Ai
Jos 8:1 Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not fear or be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land.
Jos 8:2 “You shall do to Ai and its king just as you did to Jericho and its king; you shall take only its spoil and its cattle as plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”
Jos 8:3 So Joshua rose with all the people of war to go up to Ai; and Joshua chose 30,000 men, valiant warriors, and sent them out at night.
Jos 8:4 He commanded them, saying, “See, you are going to ambush the city from behind it. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.
Jos 8:5 “Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. And when they come out to meet us as at the first, we will flee before them.
Jos 8:6 “They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us as at the first.’ So we will flee before them.
Jos 8:7 “And you shall rise from your ambush and take possession of the city, for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.
Jos 8:8 “Then it will be when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do it according to the word of the LORD. See, I have commanded you.”
Jos 8:9 So Joshua sent them away, and they went to the place of ambush and remained between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua spent that night among the people.
Jos 8:10 Now Joshua rose early in the morning and mustered the people, and he went up with the elders of Israel before the people to Ai.
Jos 8:11 Then all the people of war who were with him went up and drew near and arrived in front of the city, and camped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.
Jos 8:12 And he took about 5,000 men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
Jos 8:13 So they stationed the people, all the army that was on the north side of the city, and its rear guard on the west side of the city, and Joshua spent that night in the midst of the valley.
Jos 8:14 It came about when the king of Ai saw it, that the men of the city hurried and rose up early and went out to meet Israel in battle, he and all his people at the appointed place before the desert plain. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.
Jos 8:15 Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
Jos 8:16 And all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city.
Jos 8:17 So not a man was left in Ai or Bethel who had not gone out after Israel, and they left the city unguarded and pursued Israel.
Jos 8:18 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” So Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.
Jos 8:19 The men in ambush rose quickly from their place, and when he had stretched out his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it, and they quickly set the city on fire.
Jos 8:20 When the men of Ai turned back and looked, behold, the smoke of the city ascended to the sky, and they had no place to flee this way or that, for the people who had been fleeing to the wilderness turned against the pursuers.
Jos 8:21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that the smoke of the city ascended, they turned back and slew the men of Ai.
Jos 8:22 The others came out from the city to encounter them, so that they were trapped in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side; and they slew them until no one was left of those who survived or escaped.
Jos 8:23 But they took alive the king of Ai and brought him to Joshua.
Jos 8:24 Now when Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field in the wilderness where they pursued them, and all of them were fallen by the edge of the sword until they were destroyed, then all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.
Jos 8:25 All who fell that day, both men and women, were 12,000—all the people of Ai.
Jos 8:26 For Joshua did not withdraw his hand with which he stretched out the javelin until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
Jos 8:27 Israel took only the cattle and the spoil of that city as plunder for themselves, according to the word of the LORD which He had commanded Joshua.
Jos 8:28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, a desolation until this day.
Jos 8:29 He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening; and at sunset Joshua gave command and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the city gate, and raised over it a great heap of stones that stands to this day.
Renewing of the Covenant
Jos 8:30 Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, in Mount Ebal,
Jos 8:31 just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of uncut stones on which no man had wielded an iron tool; and they offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
Jos 8:32 He wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written, in the presence of the sons of Israel.
Jos 8:33 All Israel with their elders and officers and their judges were standing on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, the stranger as well as the native. Half of them stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had given command at first to bless the people of Israel.
Jos 8:34 Then afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
Jos 8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel with the women and the little ones and the strangers who were living among them.
The Ten Commandments
Deu 5:1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I am speaking today in your hearing, that you may learn them and observe them carefully.
Deu 5:2 “The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.
Deu 5:3 “The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today.
Deu 5:4 “The LORD spoke to you face to face at the mountain from the midst of the fire,
Deu 5:5 while I was standing between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain. He said,
Deu 5:6 ‘I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Deu 5:7 ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.
Deu 5:8 ‘You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Deu 5:9 ‘You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Deu 5:10 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Deu 5:11 ‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
Deu 5:12 ‘Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.
Deu 5:13 ‘Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Deu 5:14 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.
Deu 5:15 ‘You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.
Deu 5:16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you.
Deu 5:17 ‘You shall not murder.
Deu 5:18 ‘You shall not commit adultery.
Deu 5:19 ‘You shall not steal.
Deu 5:20 ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Deu 5:21 ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field or his male servant or his female servant, his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.’
Deu 5:22 “These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, of the cloud and of the thick gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more. He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
The Altar on Mount Ebal
Deu 27:1 Then Moses and the elders of Israel charged the people, saying, “Keep all the commandments which I command you today.
Deu 27:2 “So it shall be on the day when you cross the Jordan to the land which the LORD your God gives you, that you shall set up for yourself large stones and coat them with lime
Deu 27:3 and write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you.
Deu 27:4 “So it shall be when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up on Mount Ebal, these stones, as I am commanding you today, and you shall coat them with lime.
Deu 27:5 “Moreover, you shall build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you shall not wield an iron tool on them.
Deu 27:6 “You shall build the altar of the LORD your God of uncut stones, and you shall offer on it burnt offerings to the LORD your God;
Deu 27:7 and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and rejoice before the LORD your God.
Deu 27:8 “You shall write on the stones all the words of this law very distinctly.”
Curses from Mount Ebal
Deu 27:9 Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, “Be silent and listen, O Israel! This day you have become a people for the LORD your God.
Deu 27:10 “You shall therefore obey the LORD your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.”
Deu 27:11 Moses also charged the people on that day, saying,
Deu 27:12 “When you cross the Jordan, these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
Deu 27:13 “For the curse, these shall stand on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
Deu 27:14 “The Levites shall then answer and say to all the men of Israel with a loud voice,
Deu 27:15 ‘Cursed is the man who makes an idol or a molten image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:16 ‘Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:17 ‘Cursed is he who moves his neighbor’s boundary mark.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:18 ‘Cursed is he who misleads a blind person on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:19 ‘Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:20 ‘Cursed is he who lies with his father’s wife, because he has uncovered his father’s skirt.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:21 ‘Cursed is he who lies with any animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:22 ‘Cursed is he who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:23 ‘Cursed is he who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:24 ‘Cursed is he who strikes his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:25 ‘Cursed is he who accepts a bribe to strike down an innocent person.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deu 27:26 ‘Cursed is he who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Deuteronomy 28 Blessings for Obedience
Deu 28:1 “Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
Deu 28:2 “All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God:
Deu 28:3 “Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.
Deu 28:4 “Blessed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your beasts, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock.
Deu 28:5 “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
Deu 28:6 “Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
Deu 28:7 “The LORD shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you; they will come out against you one way and will flee before you seven ways.
Deu 28:8 “The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
Deu 28:9 “The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways.
Deu 28:10 “So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will be afraid of you.
Deu 28:11 “The LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your beast and in the produce of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.
Deu 28:12 “The LORD will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
Deu 28:13 “The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully,
Deu 28:14 and do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
Curses for Disobedience
Deu 28:15 “But it shall come about, if you do not obey the LORD your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
Deu 28:16 “Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.
Deu 28:17 “Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
Deu 28:18 “Cursed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock.
Deu 28:19 “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.
Deu 28:20 “The LORD will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me.
Deu 28:21 “The LORD will make the pestilence cling to you until He has consumed you from the land where you are entering to possess it.
Deu 28:22 “The LORD will smite you with consumption and with fever and with inflammation and with fiery heat and with the sword and with blight and with mildew, and they will pursue you until you perish.
Deu 28:23 “The heaven which is over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you, iron.
Deu 28:24 “The LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust; from heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed.
Deu 28:25 “The LORD shall cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you will go out one way against them, but you will flee seven ways before them, and you will be an example of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
Deu 28:26 “Your carcasses will be food to all birds of the sky and to the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away.
Deu 28:27 “The LORD will smite you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scab and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed.
Deu 28:28 “The LORD will smite you with madness and with blindness and with bewilderment of heart;
Deu 28:29 and you will grope at noon, as the blind man gropes in darkness, and you will not prosper in your ways; but you shall only be oppressed and robbed continually, with none to save you.
Deu 28:30 “You shall betroth a wife, but another man will violate her; you shall build a house, but you will not live in it; you shall plant a vineyard, but you will not use its fruit.
Deu 28:31 “Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat of it; your donkey shall be torn away from you, and will not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you will have none to save you.
Deu 28:32 “Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and yearn for them continually; but there will be nothing you can do.
Deu 28:33 “A people whom you do not know shall eat up the produce of your ground and all your labors, and you will never be anything but oppressed and crushed continually.
Deu 28:34 “You shall be driven mad by the sight of what you see.
Deu 28:35 “The LORD will strike you on the knees and legs with sore boils, from which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.
Deu 28:36 “The LORD will bring you and your king, whom you set over you, to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone.
Deu 28:37 “You shall become a horror, a proverb, and a taunt among all the people where the LORD drives you.
Deu 28:38 “You shall bring out much seed to the field but you will gather in little, for the locust will consume it.
Deu 28:39 “You shall plant and cultivate vineyards, but you will neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm will devour them.
Deu 28:40 “You shall have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off.
Deu 28:41 “You shall have sons and daughters but they will not be yours, for they will go into captivity.
Deu 28:42 “The cricket shall possess all your trees and the produce of your ground.
Deu 28:43 “The alien who is among you shall rise above you higher and higher, but you will go down lower and lower.
Deu 28:44 “He shall lend to you, but you will not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you will be the tail.
Deu 28:45 “So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you.
Deu 28:46 “They shall become a sign and a wonder on you and your descendants forever.
Deu 28:47 “Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things;
Deu 28:48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.
Deu 28:49 “The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you shall not understand,
Deu 28:50 a nation of fierce countenance who will have no respect for the old, nor show favor to the young.
Deu 28:51 “Moreover, it shall eat the offspring of your herd and the produce of your ground until you are destroyed, who also leaves you no grain, new wine, or oil, nor the increase of your herd or the young of your flock until they have caused you to perish.
Deu 28:52 “It shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls in which you trusted come down throughout your land, and it shall besiege you in all your towns throughout your land which the LORD your God has given you.
Deu 28:53 “Then you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom the LORD your God has given you, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you.
Deu 28:54 “The man who is refined and very delicate among you shall be hostile toward his brother and toward the wife he cherishes and toward the rest of his children who remain,
Deu 28:55 so that he will not give even one of them any of the flesh of his children which he will eat, since he has nothing else left, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you in all your towns.
Deu 28:56 “The refined and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground for delicateness and refinement, shall be hostile toward the husband she cherishes and toward her son and daughter,
Deu 28:57 and toward her afterbirth which issues from between her legs and toward her children whom she bears; for she will eat them secretly for lack of anything else, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you in your towns.
Deu 28:58 “If you are not careful to observe all the words of this law which are written in this book, to fear this honored and awesome name, the LORD your God,
Deu 28:59 then the LORD will bring extraordinary plagues on you and your descendants, even severe and lasting plagues, and miserable and chronic sicknesses.
Deu 28:60 “He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt of which you were afraid, and they will cling to you.
Deu 28:61 “Also every sickness and every plague which, not written in the book of this law, the LORD will bring on you until you are destroyed.
Deu 28:62 “Then you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, because you did not obey the LORD your God.
Deu 28:63 “It shall come about that as the LORD delighted over you to prosper you, and multiply you, so the LORD will delight over you to make you perish and destroy you; and you will be torn from the land where you are entering to possess it.
Deu 28:64 “Moreover, the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth; and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone, which you or your fathers have not known.
Deu 28:65 “Among those nations you shall find no rest, and there will be no resting place for the sole of your foot; but there the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and despair of soul.
Deu 28:66 “So your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you will be in dread night and day, and shall have no assurance of your life.
Deu 28:67 “In the morning you shall say, ‘Would that it were evening!’ And at evening you shall say, ‘Would that it were morning!’ because of the dread of your heart which you dread, and for the sight of your eyes which you will see.
Deu 28:68 “The LORD will bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the way about which I spoke to you, ‘You will never see it again!’ And there you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer.”
